    • James was born in Putnam, New York. He moved to Michigan with his family when he was 12 years old. They stopped for a time in Jackson County, eventually locating in Walker Township, Kent County. He lived on the farm until he was 18 and then went to Grand Rapids to live out the rest of his life. In 1856 he served as City Clerk. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1865. He was in various law partnerships. He was a member of the Grand Rapids Board of Education for 11 years and served as president for four terms. In 1885 he was appointed Postmaster of Grand Rapids by President Cleveland. He held that post for ten years.
