One of their witnesses was Adeline L. RICE.

J.B. enrolled in the Civil War on 2 Jan 1864 at Whitehall, New York, and was in the 5th Regiment of the New York Cavalry Volunteers, to serve 3 years or for the duration of the war. He mustered into service as a Recruit on 4 Jan 1864 at Troy, New York. He fought at Camp Stoneman near Washington D.C., Harpers Ferry, Virginia, and in Perryville, Virginia. From 19 Sept 1864 until 8 Oct 1864, he fought under General Sheridan in the battles in the Valley. On 8 Oct 1864, while near Cedar Creek, Virginia, his horse stumbled and fell on him, throwing him off while at the same time one of his feet hung in the stirrup; he fell on his back. His horse then fell, falling directly upon RICKERT'S stomach and causing him to be hospitalized at several army hospitals until he was discharged from service. J.B. was honorably discharged at Philadelphia on or about 10 June 1865 while at the Chestnut Hill Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He suffered with severe kidney and back problems due to this fall up until he died.

J.B.'s Civil War record describes him as being five feet, six inches tall with dark eyes, dark hair and dark complexion. Right after he was discharged from the war, he returned to his farm in Putnam, New York. In 1869, J.B. and his family moved to Leicester, Vermont.
