- He is hotel keeper in Ash, Monroe, Michigan in 1880.
Still a hotel keeper in Ash in 1900.
This from a newspaper clipping with no date or name of the paper. "Pleasant, jovial Dan Matthews, of Carleton, was born a hustler in Victor, N. Y., in 1831. A few years later he was stuck for three days in the Maumee swamps while journeying to the interior of Michigan in and immigrant's wagon. Settling at Okemos, he chopped wood and talked "Injun", acting as interpreter for white fur buyers. At 26 he found himself superintendent of the plank road from Detroit to Saline, now Michigan avenue. For 17 years he hung on to the job. Having read of famous cities founded by famous men, he decided that posterity should inscribe his name on golden tablets. He bought 40 acres of woods, built a hotel and called the place Carleton. J. Huff Jones, of Detroit, took a hand in the deal and they both got a full house. They advertised the place, a la western style, as a big snap for factories, and they got some, too. A large number of charcoal kilns, giving employment to over 300 men, soon followed suit. Matthews and Jones declared the deal a draw and dissolved their partnership. After a number of families had removed to the little burg, a religious spirit manifested itself. The first was in the shape of a Sunday school. After it was organized, people found that there was no place for holding it, unless "but that could never be" they should decide upon the ballroom in Matthew?s hotel. Yes, a pastor preached there, and "old inhabitants" well remember how at one time Rev. Mr. Northrop, of Monroe, delivered an earnest discourse in the bar-room of the hotel, while the listeners were eagerly imbibing his ideas and something not as dry. Mr. Matthews is now trying to retire from business, having amassed a snug little fortune."
And this from an undated obituary in an unnamed paper. "Daniel A. Matthews, the well known and highly respected citizen of Carleton, and founder of the village, died there Monday, aged 70. He was manager and proprieter of the Matthews house for 30 years. He was twice married, his last wife being Mattie A. Woodward of this city. He leaves two children, Hazel and Mildred Irene Matthews. He retired two years ago and built a fine, new residence at Carleton, where he died. The funeral will be held from the residence Thursday at 2 o'clock."
